Your iPhone Not Charging? Here Are Some Things to Check
Here is a list of this things that could cause your iPhone to not charge:
The charging port is dirty or damaged.
The charging cable is damaged.
The power adapter is not working properly.
The iPhone battery is old or damaged.
The iPhone software is not up to date.
The iPhone is in a low-power mode.
The iPhone is experiencing a hardware problem.
Let’s look at each one and expand on it.
Charging Port is Dirty or Damaged
First of all, if the charging port on your iPhone is damaged then this will be the cause of the issue and you’ll need to get this repaired in order to charge it, unless your iPhone model support wireless charging. In which case you can pop it down on a compatiable wireless charger and top up the battery.
First of al it’s worth checking that the port is clear of debris or anything else that might have worked its way in there. A common cause for iPhones not charging, is due to pocket fluff finding its way into your charge port and filling it up, leaving no room for the connector. You can try getting something thin to poke into the port (careful to not go to wild as there are connectors in there), and see if you can scrape out any fluff. A good tool to use is the SIM tray tool that came with your iPhone, alternatively you could use something like a paper clip.
Charging Cable is Damaged
At one time it was common to see an iPhone charging cable damaged towards the Lighting end of the cable, just before where it goes into the plug.
First thing is to visually check to make sure the cable is free from damage. Should you find anything, it might be worth replacing the cable, especially if there are breaks in the cable.
If you have another cable in the house, give that a try and see if it works. If it doesn’t then we know it isn’t the cable causing the iPhone to not charge.
The Power Adaptor is not working
For this one you can try a different power adaptor if you have one. If you don’t, first of all make sure that the adaptor is turned on at the wall. It would also be worth trying a different wall socket to make sure it’s not due to a fault with that.
If it still doesn’t work, try connecting your USB charge cable into something else instead of the power adaptor, such as a power bank or into a computer/laptop. If the phone works, then you know it’s a faulty power adaptor.
Battery Age
All phone batteries age with time. So if you have tried all the above steps and the iPhone is still not charging then is it due to the age of the phone and it needs a replacement battery? For this to be determined, you’ll need to take it to an Apple Genius Bar or authorized repaire center for them to check the battery condition and see if it needs replacing.
You can check on your phone itself to see what the battery capacity is. This might give you a hint as to the age and condition of the battery. If you do the following:
Go to Settings
Choose Battery
Choose Battery Health & Charging
Here it will give you a percentage indicating the health of the battery. When new, you’d expect it to be at 100% but over time the capacity they hold reduces with use. If you are less than 85%, you might experience issues such as reduced battery life, phone feeling hot, phone feeling sluggish or even the iPhone shuts off randomly. These are all indicators that your battery is in need of replacing.
Summary
In summary, there are a few reasons that might stop your iPhone from charging. If you follow the above steps and you still don’t have any luck then it would be worth taking your iPhone to an Apple Genius Bar or an Authorized Repair Center for some investigation.
